Nintendo held an investors meeting recently and talked about sales of first and second-party games for the Switch, as well as the console itself. This post will focus on sales of first and second-party titles on the platform. This meeting was delayed due to COVID-19; it was meant to be back in April to discuss how the company has done for the end of March, Q4 of 2019.
Nintendo had amazing 2019 and first few months of 2020, despite the early days of COVID-19 making an impact around the globe. The Switch now sits at 55.77 million SKUs. That is up roughly 74.7% from 41.67 million on October 31 last year.
For software, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is the best selling game on Nintendo Switch. The game has now reached 24.77 million units. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is also a game that performed really well. It has not even been out as long as MK8D, yet it still managed to ship 18.84 million. Another game that sold extremely well was The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and it was a launch title. Nintendo has been using friend codes ever since the Wii launched in 2006. This was carried over to the Nintendo 3DS which released in 2011. Then when 2012 saw the release of the Wii U and this time, Nintendo did not use friend codes. However, on March 3, 2017 when Nintendo Switch came out, they went back to using friend codes. It turns out, there was a reason for doing so.
A leaked PowerPoint presentation was leaked for the Wii. In it contained a slide discussing friend codes. It seems that nintendo wanted players to have a better experience when playing with family or friends. Rather than guessing someone’s name and sending a friend request from a stranger, friend codes make those random friends requests less likely as that person would need to guess the randomly given 12 digit code. It’s probable that Nintendo wanted to have this return for the Switch.

Nintendo has been in talks with ValueAct for quite some time now. ValueAct Capital investing $1.1 billion US in Nintendo Co., Ltd. and 2.6 million of the shares from investors. This means that ValueAct owns roughly two per cent of Nintendo. They believe Nintendo will be much more popular in the future.
Nintendo is very successful with its IP’s and hardware. They are even getting another Mario film in production with the help from Illumination. However, Nintendo want more success out of mobile titles. They also want a better presence with online services.
Nintendo has been in talks with ValueAct for quite some time now. ValueAct Capital investing $1.1 billion US in Nintendo Co., Ltd. and 2.6 million of the shares. This means that ValueAct owns roughly two per cent of Nintendo. Two reasons why the investment makes sense is due to ValueAct believing Nintendo will be much more popular in the future by expanding on its brands to new endeavors such as collaborating with Illumination with a Super Mario Bros. movie, branching its Super Mario IP to three theme park locations, working with LEGO, and releasing games on mobile devices.
Nintendo has had a great few years with its success of the Switch. More major third-party games are coming to the platform, so many games that many did not expect to see this happen. However, the Nintendo Switch Online service has not lived up to its competitors counterparts like PlayStation PLUS or Xbox Game Pass. Those two continually get praised. Nintendo is also not always doing as well as they wish to with mobile titles. Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp, Fire Emblem: Heroes, and Mario Kart Tours were winners for the company; on the other hand, Super Mario RUN, Miitomo, (which shut down) and the Nintendo Switch Online app were met with disappointment. Nintendo and ActValue seem to believe that this will help them quite a bit.
Nintendo released the Switch on March 3, 2017, along with first-party titles The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and 1-2-Switch. (Breath of the Wild also released on Wii U that same day.) Today, the Switch turns three years old. Time does definitely fly.
To celebrate the three anniversary, this month will have one first-party title and a second-party game will launch this month. On March 6, Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX will release on the platform. The other game is Animal Crossing: New Horizons which will launch on March 20. There will also be a limited Animal Crossing themed Nintendo Switch bundle for the game.
The NPD’s are out now for the month of January 2020. Last month, Nintendo Switch was the best selling console in the US. The Switch has also been the best selling console for over a year now.
While the Switch was the number one best selling console in the US last month, the best selling video game for that month was Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot, followed by Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. The third best selling game was Madden NFL 20. Next up is Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, Grand Theft Auto V, NBA 2K20, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Mario Kart 8, Ring Fit Adventure, and finally Red Dead Redemption II, respectively.
