Will Next-Gen Games Cost More?

UPDATE: The PC version will remain at $59.99 US / CA$79.99 for the base version.

In the United States, major video games generally cost $59.99 or $79.99 in Canada. That may be changing for next-gen consoles PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X. Take-Two Interactive have announced that NBA 2K21 will cost more on PS5 and Xbox One. Gamers will have to pay $69.99 US for its new title; this likely means other big titles will follow suit. In Canada, it is possible that games could costs as much as $94.99, unless publishers are willing to take a loss in the Canadian market and price games at $89.99.

For those wanting the game at $59.99, gamers will want to get game on current generation consoles. Additionally, it is not yet clear what the game will cost on PC or Nintendo Switch if there will even be a port on Switch.

What Sony Revealed During the PlayStation 5 Presentation

Sony held a pre-recorded video presentation on Thursday, June 11 to show off the PlayStation 5 and its upcoming games. The PS5 is due out this holiday season. Many games were shown, much of them releasing this year while others will launch in 2021.

PlayStation 4 & PlayStation 4 Digital Edition

The PlayStation 5 is planned to release later this year. There will be two models available. One will be the PlayStation 5 and the other model will be called PlayStation 5 Digital Edition, similar to Microsoft’s digital only Xbox One. As of this publication, no price was announced over the console. Sony is likely going to try to see how long they can wait before Microsoft shares the price of the Xbox Series X to be competitive.

Dual Sense Controller

Next up is the controller. Say goodbye to DualShock because a brand new controller will be released with the PS5. (At the end of the stream, it almost looked like two may launch with the console but that may not even be the case in the end.) Dual Sense is the name of the new controller. It will have haptic feedback in the analog sticks and the shoulder buttons are supposed to be better, too. No price was shown for how much a controller will cost without the console.

Upcoming PS5 Games

Finally, games for a console are very important and can determine a console’s success or failure. Several games will launch this year and others will release next year. To list a small handful, titles such as Project Athia from SQUARE ENIX, From Software’s Demon’s Souls, Horizon Forbidden West from Guerrilla Games, Gran Turismo from SIE, a LittleBigPlanet spin-off from Sumo Digital called Sackboy: A Big Adventure, and Spider-man: Miles Morale from Insomniac Games.

At the end, Sony made mention that more details on the PS5 will be announced at a later time. The exact release date and price is still not known. To learn more, check out the Official PlayStation Blog.
